Flats and Back Country Fishing Charters & Guides
The Middle Keys, Florida Keys
This is the most complete list of Florida Keys fishing charters for flats fishing and
back country fishing on the Internet today!  We know that anglers want to
comparison shop online and make advance reservations with the Florida Keys
fishing charter that's the right fit for them!!  We know how difficult it is to compare
charters by looking at the individual websites.  Because there are only a few
websites that Google ranks highly, many excellent charters and guides are
overlooked because their website doesn't come up on the first few pages of a
search.  We've done the research for you and compiled a very comprehensive list!
Browse through this page, see at-a-glance highlights of each Florida Keys fishing
charter and choose
the perfect fishing charter for you!  - Gail Culver, Webmaster

Helicon and to return many times as a friend. You will be exposed to a lot of wildlife and ecological
views and experiences along with the fishing. It is quite necessary to understand and be exposed to

Catch and release angling on the flats of the Florida Keys requires
several key ideas and methods. Aboard the Helicon we feel we
address these in a totally professional and unpressured way. The
goal here is to give you the best possible opportunities to catch that
sought after trophy fish and release it to be caught again, without the
undo pressures often associated with this type of sport. We are
prepared to help the total novice as well as the angler who has
fished for many years.

The 'flats' surround all of the Florida Keys.  A flat is a shallow area or sandbar.  The bottom of these areas are mostly covered in a carpet of seagrass,
known as Turtle Grass. This seagrass is the environment that the most challenging fish come to hunt for food. Bonefish, permit, tarpon, barracuda,
and sharks are commonly found in the shallows.

Searching for and sighting fish to cast at is what the sport of flats fishing is all about. Fortunately for Florida Keys and Key West visitors, we are
surrounded by shallow water: one or two feet deep and is often clear as glass.

  • 4 and 8 hour trips
  • Everything is included for a great day on the water. All the angler
needs to bring is food and plenty to drink, polarized sunglasses,
    sunscreen and a hat.
As in most sports today, there are trophy hunters who judge the
success on how many or how big of a fish they caught to
determine if they had a good day or not. However, one of the most
important things a Florida Keys fishing guide should teach clients
is to take it all in – watch the birds along the shoreline, the eagle
ray gliding across the flats, the barracuda lying still against the
mangroves waiting for a needle fish to swim into his striking
range, seeing the beautiful permit fish floating on the surface, or
just to stop and look up at that beautiful blue sky. It only takes a
moment, but man, it will make you feel glad to be alive; it does for
me, and I do it every day I’m on the flats.

Captain Walker

He is a young fella, born and raised in Marathon, Florida, and from a
family that make their livelihood from fishing. Captain Walker loves to fish
and he is a natural born fisherman. Walker's knowledge of the local hot
spots, ensures every possible advantage for a prosperous day of fishing!
Fly fishing in Key West has contributed to the modern development of the sport.  In the past, anglers on fly would be found exclusively on the flats. And
today, that is still mostly true. But the limits of the sport are being stretched, as some anglers toss flies to huge tarpon and even marlin.

Equipment has followed suit. Fly reels and rods are now being manufactured en masse for fish weighing over 100 pounds. And fly shops on the island
offer huge streamers the size of birds. These are switched in place of a trolled, hook less bait in front of a billfish.
___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
The tarpon is non-edible and a very athletic and strong fish so this type of fishing will truly wear an angler out!  You can
find this species throughout the Florida Keys and are targeted more in the spring.  Baby tarpon may be found in
residential canals that surround mangrove islands.  In summer, tarpon range from babies of 5 to 25 pounds up to an
average size of 30 to 60 pounds.  For the most part, these tarpon live in the Keys and don't roam far. huge streamers
the size of birds. These are switched in place of a trolled, hook less bait in front of a billfish.

For over a century anglers have flocked to the Keys to do battle with fishing's ultimate prize,
the big Silver King! Tarpon fishing is not only one of the most exciting styles of fishing in the
Middle Keys (we often catch fish over 100- pounds!), it's also a great option for anglers who
don't want to spend a full day on the water and enjoy the more sporty side of fishing.
Seasonal tarpon trips are offered in the mornings and evenings, where we'll live bait fish at
three of the Middles Keys bridges (Long Key, Seven-Mile and Bahia Honda).
Captain Jason Long

For Florida Keys Charter Fishing, we're
your Best Bet!
Fish with live bait along the bridges of the Florida Keys for the
largest tarpon you will ever see. We can specifically target this
monster gamefish all day, or catch them in the morning and
evening while still fishing for other species through mid-day. The
unmatched power of the tarpon make it one of Florida's most
sought after sportfish.

My name is Capt. Paul Fisicaro and I have been guiding in the Florida
Keys for 15 years. I was born and raised in the Bronx New York where
my passion for fishing first started at age 4. My father is the one who
showed me what fishing was all about and that's all it took. Whether it
was fishing for stripers and bluefish off the jetties of the L.I. Sound or
fishing off a 14 ft. skiff in the bay for flounder or fluke, I couldn't be
happier. Now I'm in the Florida Keys and doing what I love most. When I
came to live in the Keys, I found that catching bonefish, tarpon and
permit to be one of the most thrilling times I had ever experienced. Once
I had experienced that thrill, I decided to do it for a living and to show
other anglers one of the most enjoyable aspects of fishing. The
expression I see on their faces, makes it all worth while.

Whether you are a novice or seasoned angler, it is always wonderful to
see the excitement that people show. The expressions on your faces
when you hook up to a bonefish that screams off 200 yards of line in
one run or a gill rattling jump by a 100 lb. tarpon is priceless.

I specialize in fly fishing and light tackle and offer the best quality fishing
tackle available. I have been fly fishing since I was 11 years old and tie
my own flies that are proven patterns that catch fish.
Capt. Paul Fisicaro

All trips depart at 7:30 AM unless another
time is arranged. During tarpon season, we
could leave dock as early as 6:00 AM. We
usually meet 15 to 30 minutes ahead of
departure time.

I launch from 3 different locations in
Marathon and 2 in Big Pine Key. I will decide
where to launch the day before our trip. It
mainly depends on how the fishing is in each
particular region.
Scott has been passionately studying the waters of the Florida Keys almost his entire
life. As a child growing up in South Florida and in the Keys, he was exposed to, and
subsequently fell in love with every island and flat comprising that wilderness of the
Florida Keys and Everglades known as the Florida Keys Backcountry. This fascination
allowed him to accumulate an amount of Keys-wide knowledge held by few guides.

A lot of his success is attributed to being a true Keys “local”. He is a second generation
guide, as his father guided in the same waters for 20 years prior to Scott becoming a
full-time guide himself. He has truly grown up in the guiding business and feels
privileged to have known and learned from many guides of different generations
throughout the entire Florida Keys. Scott knows he could never repay them for their help
other than to treat the guiding profession with the utmost respect.

When a fish isn't allowed to be harvested, it must immediately be returned to the water free, alive, and unharmed.  However, if a fish is allowed to be taken
at a certain size limit, it's okay to temporarily possess it to measure it, as long as it is measured immediately after removing it from the water, and the fish
is then immediately returned to the water free, alive, and unharmed if it is not a legal-size fish.
