Islamorada Florida Keys Fishing Charters for Flats
and Back Country Fishing Trips
Key Largo Florida Fishing Guides
This is the most complete list of Florida Keys fishing guides for flats fishing and
back country fishing on the Internet today!  We know that anglers want to
comparison shop online and make advance reservations with the Florida Keys
fishing charter that's the right fit for them!!  We know how difficult it is to compare
charters by looking at the individual websites.  Because there are only a few
websites that Google ranks highly, many excellent charters and guides are
overlooked because their website doesn't come up on the first few pages of a
search.  We've done the research for you and compiled a very comprehensive list!
Browse through this page, see at-a-glance highlights of each Florida Keys fishing
charter and choose

The boats I use for hunting the fish of the flats are: the

Capt. Pete Rowney
I love to sight fish with my customers.  It doesn't matter if it's with bait, and
sometimes more effective ways to fish but for me, none are as exciting or
satisfying.  Of course there are days when sight fishing is impossible but if
I had to choose a favorite, sight fishing would be it.  I particularly like using
artificials and especially flies.
For me, a day on the water is the entire experience.  It's the scenery, the
anticipation, the hunt, the teamwork, the cast, the hookup and the laughs.
It all really boils down to having a good time, fish or no fish, rain or shine.
Captain Steve Friedman

Capt. Steve Friedman offers shallow
water adventures in Islamorada, Key
Largo and the Florida Everglades. With
the versatility of a shallow water
technical skiff and a bay boat, we can
offer a fishing experience for up to 4
people. We welcome anglers of all
abilities and offer special trips for kids
of all ages.
■Your fishing adventure is driven by a choice of custom Hell’s Bay

padded bench seat and backrest, stabilization grips, cooler, live wells,
GPS and all the required safety equipment including life preservers
and flares.
■Each skiff has it’s own specialized purpose and are professionally
engineered to allow guide and anglers to safely skim over just 6-
inches of water. Because of the design, my anglers catch fish most
boats can’t even approach – without disturbing the sensitive seagrass
or marine life below.
■Steve provides his clients with only the finest rods, reels and tackle
available including Hatch reels, G Loomis, Sage, Scott, Tibor, Abel,
Nautilus, Schimano and Diawa. If you like, you can bring your favorite or

"Captain Chris specializes in sight fishing in the backcountry. In this clear,
shallow water, often just inches deep, you are figuratively "hunting" the fish.
From red fish, to permit, snook, bone fish and tarpon you will see the fish
before they ever see you. You'll experience "tailing" fish as they dig into the
mud and grass to eat shrimp and crabs with only their tails flashing in the
sun. All of this is possible due to the small, lightweight skiff and expert
poling of Captain Chris."

For years this area has been the "go to" destination for the serious

here than any other place in the world. New records are being set by
fly fishing anglers in the Islamorada area to this day.

Still, nothing is more rewarding to me than seeing new and

something to drink! Everything else is supplied.

Fly fishing is more than just is an art form that is
easy to learn and has infinite skills to perfect.
If you are visiting here in the Florida Keys and have never held
a fly rod before, in a few short minutes I can share with you
some basic techniques of rod stroke and line control that will
set in motion a lifetime of enjoyment to share with sons,
daughters and grandchildren.
After a short time of instruction we can take your new skills out
to the shallow flats of the Keys, backcountry of Florida Bay or
even in Everglades National Park and sight fish for game fish
like tarpon, bonefish, permit, snook, redfish, jacks, barracuda
or sharks.
For those that are already proficient at fly casting but don't
utilize the benefits of techniques like the "double haul" or
"water loading", I will be happy to help you as much or as little
as you would like.
Did You Know?
The 'flats' surround all of the Florida Keys.  A flat is a shallow area or sandbar.  The bottom of these areas are mostly
covered in a carpet of seagrass, known as Turtle Grass. This seagrass is the environment that the most challenging
fish come to hunt for food. Bonefish, permit, tarpon, barracuda, and sharks are commonly found in the shallows.

Searching for and sighting fish to cast at is what the sport of flats fishing is all about. Fortunately for Florida Keys and
Key West visitors, we are surrounded by shallow water: one or two feet deep and is often clear as glass.

You'll fish from a clean 18' Action Craft flats skiff, powered by a reliable
Yamaha 150 h.p. 4 stroke outboard. The boat is dry, stable, and equipped with
two padded chairs for your comfort. There is a casting deck forward for two
anglers to stand on while sight casting. You do not need a Florida fishing
license, as the boat's license includes all the anglers that are on board.

The boat has dry storage enough for a medium gear bag or two, and has a
cooler with ice for your drinks and lunch. I have two sets of raingear on board

Captain Brewer has developed a guiding style that reflects his roots as a
Keys native. Brewer teaches his clients about the fragile Keys ecosystem,
and to respect both the fish and their habitat. "I want visitors to the area to
have the whole experience. I want to show them what's kept me here for 35
years. It might be the sight of mudding bonefish, watching a 100 pound
tarpon open its mouth and suck a fly, the birds and wildlife that inhabit the
Florida Bay, or the expansive sunrise over the Atlantic."
Capt. Craig Brewer
Captain Steve's boat The Family Vacation is new
22-foot shallow water Pathfinder powered by a 150
HP, four-stroke Yamaha outboard motor and a Motor
pounds of thrust for shallow water fishing. The boat
will accommodate a maximum of four passengers;
however, depending on the type of fishing fewer
anglers may be preferable.
Captain Steve Griswold

Captain Steve has the equipment, boat and
experience to make your visit to the Florida Keys a
true Family Vacation, whether you plans include
fishing in the backcountry, the ocean reefs and
wrecks or an Eco tour in Everglades National Park.
Fly fishing in Key West has contributed to the modern development of the sport.  In the past, anglers on fly would be
found exclusively on the flats. And today, that is still mostly true. But the limits of the sport are being stretched, as
some anglers toss flies to huge tarpon and even marlin.

Equipment has followed suit. Fly reels and rods are now being manufactured en masse for fish weighing over 100
pounds. And fly shops on the island offer huge streamers the size of birds. These are switched in place of a trolled,
hook less bait in front of a billfish.
Did You Know?
The tarpon is non-edible and a very athletic and strong fish so this type of fishing will truly wear an angler out!  You
can find this species throughout the Florida Keys and are targeted more in the spring.  Baby tarpon may be found in
residential canals that surround mangrove islands.  In summer, tarpon range from babies of 5 to 25 pounds up to an
average size of 30 to 60 pounds.  For the most part, these tarpon live in the Keys and don't roam far..
Did You Know?
The Bonefish also called phantom and gray ghost is probably pound for pound the strongest and fastest running
fish in salt water.  Bonefishing is a shallow-water pursuit done in depths ranging from 8 inches to 8 feet. Flats
sporting currents; dropoffs along the edges; clean, healthy seagrass that promotes rooting around for food; and
cruising stingrays that do the rooting for the smart but freeloading bonefish are all things to look for.

Bonefish is caught in the Florida Keys all year round. The spring and fall are probably the best times of the year to find
fish all day long because the water temperatures are more constant. In the winter, mid day is very good once the water
warms up.  And in the summer pursuing bonefish early and late in the day will likely be more comfortable.
Did You Know?
There are three basic ways to fish for bonefish. Some people chum with bits of shrimp or crab to bring the fish on to
the flats. Some anglers will stake up the boat on the edge of the flat and wait for bonefish to come in with the tide. The
third way is to pole the boat around on the flats and sight fish for them.  Flat seas and calm conditions offer the
opportunity to spot tailing bonefish. A bonefish with its head down nosing around for food in shallow water often
leaves its tail and dorsal finning above the surface.

A fly angler can try a more aggressive approach because the flies are so light in weight.. Bonefish are great sportfish
because of the challenge involved in fooling them.
Did You Know?
A blend of talent, knowledge and skill distinguishes the best back country guides in the Florida Keys. As you embark
on your expedition into the wilderness of the Florida Keys, your guide's objective is to find the fish. The guide must
consider such factors as the tides, time of day, water temperature, wind speed and direction and cloud cover, just to
name a few. And while the guide must be proficient in processing this information, he must also be adept at piloting
the relatively small craft through tiny channels, which sometimes are nothing more than unmarked prop ditches And
finally, the guide is there to take you where you should be; that is, where your skill level dictates.  It's very important that
you give your guide some idea of your angling ability (be realistic).
Did You Know?
When a fish isn't allowed to be harvested, it must immediately be returned to the water free, alive, and unharmed.
However, if a fish is allowed to be taken at a certain size limit, it's okay to temporarily possess it to measure it, as long
as it is measured immediately after removing it from the water, and the fish is then immediately returned to the water
free, alive, and unharmed if it is not a legal-size fish.

In the Back country and Flats barracudas get huge and in great number starting in around November and stay
real strong and good fishing all through the winter here till about March, April when the waters warm and most
move offshore. Top water, Live Bait, Plug, Fly fishing.

The Florida Saltwater Grand Slam program is managed by the FWC in partnership with the International Game Fish
Association (IGFA). Grand Slams challenge anglers to catch three specific fish species in a single day and were
created to increase the variety of species targeted by anglers. There are currently four Grand Slam challenges:
Panhandle, West Coast, South Florida and East Coast. Successful applicants receive a certificate signed by both the
President of the IGFA and the Executive Director of the FWC to recognize their achievement.

Florida's anglers should be proud of their conservation efforts.  They have helped to restore or sustain valuable
fisheries, including snook, red drum and spotted seatrout.  As the number of anglers continues to grow and our be
harvested in as good a condition as possible.  The next angler will thank you for it.

Permit are the Bulldogs of the flats. They will run long and hard. When you get them near to the boat , they start
running out again like you had just hooked him up. They will do this several times. After a long while, you think you
finally have the fish tired enough to land him. You get him close to the boat , yelling to your fishing partner to get the
net. The fish just takes off on another long run. Now you don't know who is more tired, the fish or you. After a while
longer and a few more runs, you finally land the hardest fighting fish you have ever caught on light-tackle. This is a
typical scenario of an encounter with a Permit.
Did You Know?
In the Gulf of Mexico, hook and line fishermen are required to use circle hooks and dehooking devices to improve the
chance of survival of any unintentionally caught fish. They’re also required to use venting tools when necessary.
(When reef fish are brought quickly to the surface by hook and line, the gas in their swimbladder can overexpand.
Venting tools  help deflate the abdominal cavity, preventing serious injury to the fish. This also helps the fish descend
after being released.) Management also prohibits fishing in certain areas of the Gulf to protect sensitive fish
populations and habitats.

fish when they are digging for food - or actually see the fish in the clear waters of the Keys.

Night Fishing

When the sun goes down, the action heats up!

Night fishing gives anglers an opportunity to see a side of the Florida Keys few have.
We offer two different trips depending on your tastes. Reef fishing at night produces
some of the best snapper catches we have seen. It is not uncommon to catch our limit
of snapper at night.

Our near shore shark & tarpon is popular during the spring/summer tarpon migration.
Thousands of sharks and tarpon use our inter island channels to move along the coast.
